The Potting Shed at The Grounds - Alexandria - My Kiki Cake -Sydney Food Blog

On the weekend, there is nothing that I enjoy more than brunch or lunch at one of Sydney’s wonderful cafés or restaurants. In recent years, there has been an abundance of new places opening that have put many small and local suburbs on the food eating grid. I’m talking about the likes of Cornersmith in Marrickville, The Butcher’s Block in Wahroonga, Clodeli in Clovelly and Mercato e Cucina in Gladesville. Then there are areas like Alexandria with an abundance of space and multiple residential developments going on, where food establishments are popping up every week. It is great for the foodies out there like myself, who are always up for trying something new.

Today’s post was ‘kind of’ one of those new experience moments. We were trying to decide on a lunch time destination and to ponder our thoughts we stopped for a coffee at The Grounds of Alexandria, which I have blogged previously here and here. Packed and congested, this venue isn’t for all, but I always find it fun wondering around the markets being tempted by food stalls and beautiful bouquets. A stop is never complete without a browse of the shelves at Salts, Meats & Cheese a great providore of all things Italian. After grabbing our coffees we walked past The Potting Shed, which was being built the last time I was there. It is an extension of The Grounds venue but caters as a laid back bar serving lunch and dinner. Fancy that, I like to call it fate but we walked in and asked for a table and we’re seated right away. Lunch time destination sorted!

Every detail at the venue has been perfectly thought out. The interior makes you feel like you are in a far away country place. Plants surround you, the tables and chairs are garden furniture, the plates and cups reminding me of pot plants and the bar mimics the look and feel of a barn. I commend those in charge of the fit out, it is definitely impressive and ties in well with the neighbouring section of The Grounds.

Having not eaten breakfast, we went slightly overboard in our ordering, but to our defence we didn’t realise that the serving sizes would be so big.

First out is a tasty and complex Baby Beets Salad. By complex, I’m referring to the cigar like things filled with goats cheese. Great for presentation and also good for texture. Underneath all of the greenery were a selection of different Roasted Baby Beetroot, Watercress, Radicchio, Hazelnuts, Pickled Golden Shallots and a dressing of Apple Balsamic.

On Sundays, even I can not deny the goodness of deep fried food.

The Buttermilk Popcorn Chicken was a pleasant and flavoursome surprise. I was imagining small pieces of chicken with heaps of batter and a lot of oil. Instead, there were large tender balls of chicken, coated and crunchy, with a side of honey mustard to dip into. The pot was full of the chicken tenders as well, which is very good value for $10.00.

The Potting Shed at The Grounds - Alexandria - My Kiki Cake -Sydney Food Blog - Huge Antipasto Board

My favourite pick from the menu had to be the Charcuterie, Cheese and Antipasto Board. Not only were all of the ingredients of a high quality, but there was just so much food and choice. When this was served, I was definitely the emoji with love heart eyes.

So what was in it? Well…..There were cured meats, an assortment of three cheeses, fruit, marinated and pickled vegetables, charcoal skordalia all teamed alongside lavosh, grissini and this wonderful fruit bread, I believe there were raspberries in it. Everything was DELIGHTFUL, and the whole board was only $20.00, very good value.

Our impromptu lunch at The Potting shed turned out to be a wonderful affair. I honestly can’t wait to go back and try more of the menu. I kept spying the other food that was coming out and I definitely have my eyes on the sliders and hot dogs.
