Good morning on this chilly Saturday. Wow winter surely feels to be with us today, 16 degrees! Summer please come back. To get everyone excited about their weekend eating, I thought I should share some Greek food love with Sardelles (Greek word for Sardine), a restaurant/take away bar in the Gazi district of Athens. Greek food is becoming ever more popular in Sydney at the moment, so I have listed out some of my favourites and also some that are on my Bucket List for you to try out:
The Animal – Newtown (blog post)
The Apollo – Darlinghurst (blog post)
Gyradiko – Bexley – just opened gyros joint which is supposedly making the real deal Greek style Gyros (309-313 Forest Road, Bexley)
Sardelles has two parts; the sit down restaurant side and the newly opened take-away quick-eat side. The restaurant was full and we didn’t have much time, so we opted for the take away, and perched ourselves on the stools and tables outside to eat. The seafood here was fantastic, and is the perfect oasis of a seaside escape in the middle of the city. Sitting outside is also a great vantage point for people watching. I always love to see how people go about their daily lives in different cities. We ordered a whole lot of dishes to share, which is the best way to eat Greek food, as well as a seafood style gyros each. Let the lunch unfold….
Greek Salad / Xoriatiki / Village Salad.
Fried Calamari served with Chips and Pita Bread.
Seafood Gyros – Grilled Prawns, Taramasalata, Tomato, Onion & Chips.
Of course we had to order the star ingredient that the restaurant was named after, Sardelles lightly fried and served with Chips & Pita.
…with a splash of lemon.
A wonderfully yummy seafood lunch, which I would recommend to anyone in the area. The seafood gyros was something new, and a nice change to all of the meat we had been eating. If you want seafood in Athens, there is an abundance of options serving up good quality, fresh ingredients. Your best bet is to head down to Piraeus where all the fishing boats come in, and sit at one of the seafood tavernas on the water. Bliss!
