Where to eat in Athens? The city is full of restaurants offering all of the best dishes in Greek cuisine. Me being the planning freak that I am, tried reading every possible article and blog post that reviewed some of the current favourites. Tzitzikas and Mermigas was one of those places. Located just near Syntagma Square (centre of the city), it is the perfect lunch/dinner spot after a day of sightseeing or spot of shopping on Ermou St or at the nearby Attica department store.
The restaurant is generally very busy so make a booking if you can. We risked our luck and turned up at 9pm looking for a table of 5. After about a 30 minute wait we were seated and hungry for some Greek cuisine with a twist. I guess you would call this place a modern taverna. The atmosphere is buzzing, waitstaff run around from table to table, music plays in the background and the walls are adorned in Greek products. Simple yet comfortable, this is the perfect dining style.
The food at Tzitzikas and Mermigas is fantastic. The recipes are old style Greek dishes, done up with some modern pizazz. The food is also very reasonably priced (but I find most food in Greece to be extremely cheap compared to Sydney), and the service was attentive. If you’re in Athens I would definitely stop by, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately I can not find the menu anywhere online, let alone a website for the restaurant so unfortunately I can’t provide you with details on each of the dishes. I can divulge that the photos below showcase the Chickpea Salad (this was my favourite), Cos Salad with Pomegranate, Hand Cut Chips, Pork Fillet, Lamb, Grilled Fish, Rabbit Stifado (stew) and Xorta (steamed spinach).
