Good Afternoon! Lovely to say that I’m here blogging on a Monday and not at work, thank you labour day long weekend. This post is from last Saturday night when my two partners in crime and I headed to dinner at Paper Planes, Bondi Beach. We discovered this place a month or so ago when we came down one night to eat at Miss Chu’s which is next door. Miss Chu’s kitchen had already closed so we opted for this place and found a gem, modern and fun Japanese restaurant.
Saturday night meant that cocktails had to occur. My choice is the Tokyo POP made of Pimms & St Germain with Garden Fruits, Lemonade and a Pop Rocks Rim. Delicious!
This here is the Harajuku Girl, a chilled Martini of Watermelon, Coconut Water, St Germain & Bombay Sapphire.
I’ve recently had a new wave of love for the Edamame. When I first discovered them I went a little crazy and ate them so much that my addiction slowly waned and then died, but slowly they have been introduced back into my diet. These Edamame Beans with Chilli Salt are a favourite as they are pleasantly spicy and make for the perfect nibble whilst pondering over the menu.
We order different plates to share, with the menu being made up of smaller dishes, sushi, sashimi, mains and sides. First up is the Spicy Tuna Roll with Apple, Togarashi Chilli, Mayonnaise, Chive & Tobiko. I would never have thought in a million years that apple would work in sushi but it was perfect in adding some crunch and sweetness alongside the fresh tuna.
Jes orders a Paper Planes Pork Belly Bun with Jalapeno Mayonnaise & Pickled Vegetables. I tried this the last time we visited and it is very memorable but messy to eat as the mayonnaise is flowing. The pork inside is tender in its layers of fattiness with the filling being incased in a pillowy soft bun.
Alessia and I choose something slightly fresher and go for a serve of the Sashimi Ceviche served in Lettuce Cups. You buy these per piece and I can assure you that you’ll be tempted to order more. The lettuce is crisp, the sashimi fresh and each bite is pure seafood heaven, tied together with the creaminess of the avocado.
It was a bit of a Sashimi affair with each of us loving raw fish. We order the 20 piece assorted which comes with Tuna, Kingfish, Salmon and Scallop.
The Sake Flamed Teriyaki Chicken with Sautéed Wild Mushrooms, Shallots & Sesame is one of my favourites from the night with the teriyaki being sticky and sweet but not overly heavy in flavour. We didn’t order rice but I would advise to do so with this dish so that you can mix it into the sauce.
Needing some greens, the Wakame & Tofu Salad with Mixed Leaves, Shallots and Sesame Dressing is a good option alongside the chicken.
Overall it was the perfect amount of food to be full and satisfied with but next time dessert has to be an option with the Green Tea Rocher calling my name. I’d say this has been one of the best Japanese restaurants I’ve eaten at in a long time. The food is fresh and tasty, the venue has an awesome fit out, the location is unbeatable in the centre of Bondi beach and the wait staff are extremely friendly and relaxed.

Adios for now everyone…I’m off to Balmain :) Enjoy the last few hours of the weekend. OH and daylight savings, welcome back into my life. You are a most welcome visitor. Bring on the summertime xxx
I’ve always admired their ceiling. I still need to check this place out. I am eying that pork belly Bun.
Very cool interior. It’s an interesting contrast between skateboards and folded paper planes.
that pork belly bun sounds insanely delish
It’s a mini sandwich of heaven.
Love that edamame are so addictive! Green tea rocher sounds so very intriguing!
Super addictive when chilli salt is involved as well.
This place looks beautiful! Love those origami swans!
Tres chic :)
The salmon cups look so good! ;D It has been a while since we visited so the menu has changed a lot :)
You’ll have to revisit, I loved everything we ordered.
Bondi Really has some great places to eat out and drink. I love getting out of the CBD of Sydney to eat out in Bondi….after a swim at the beach of course :)
A swim at the beach should be mandatory :) work up an appetite.
hehe yeah exactly right! Nothing like a swim on a hot summers day, followed up by hitting some great restaurants and bars close by
