Two days before leaving for Melbourne, an article circulated the papers stating that the world’s best pizza was being made in Brunswick. It was instantly on the list of places we needed to try during our few days away. Of course, my love of pizza got the better of me and the minute we landed and checked into the hotel, we set off in search of 400 Gradi on Lygon Street. Being Easter Monday, we forgot that the general public would also have the day off, and we were most likely going to be waiting for a table. Luckily the turnaround was quick and within half an hour we were warm and toasty inside, pondering over the menu, our stomachs growling at the smell of pizza filling the air.

The Piatto di Antipasto is filled with an assortment of  Cured Meats, Italian Cheeses, Olives, Marinated Vegetables and Bread Sticks. My favourite is the cheese with its drizzle of Olive Oil, pure heaven.

Next out is the main attraction, the Margherita Pizza that pizzaiolo Johnny di Francesco won the specialita traditionale garantita (STG) pizza prize for. The competition took place in Parma, Italy with 600 entrants (six from Australia), coming from 35 countries around the world. A very impressive achievement. So I’m sure you’re all sitting there thinking…Was the pizza any good? Of course it was, just look at those photos. The base was thin in the centre and had my favourite raised edge of wood fired, chewy dough. The topping is simple and fresh, using the best ingredients of tomato, mozzarella, garlic, olive oil and basil leaves. Buonissimo!!

Tempted by the desserts menu, we kindly decline as our stomachs cant take much more. Satisfied and happy to have tried some of the best pizza in Melbourne, we head off and walk the whole way back to the CBD, which helps us to digest and get us hungry again for our dinner that night at Chin Chin, which I will be posting about soon.
